METREX, the Network of European metropolitan regions and areas, is an international non-profit association founded in 1996. The METREX network focuses on the exchange of scientific information, expertise and experience in the field of spatial planning and development at the level of metropolitan regions and promotes knowledge transfer between experts from all over Europe and different levels of government (European, national, regional and local). The members of the network are its main asset and together represent a vast experience in dealing with many of today’s most pressing metropolitan problems in Europe. This brings them into direct contact with experts and decision-makers in almost 50 regions and areas. The network also focuses on strategic planning and its socio-economic, environmental and transport aspects.
Brno has been a member of the METREX network since 2020, making it the only Czech city to be part of this prestigious European network.
Membership in the METREX network allows the city of Brno to map how metropolitan cooperation and planning is handled by other METREX network members, and to draw on examples of good practice, projects and cooperation with European regional authorities. The network also provides an opportunity to present and share knowledge about the Brno Metropolitan Area, the long-term goals of metropolitan cooperation, the introduction of integrated urban tools and vertical and horizontal cooperation between partners at all levels.
