The metropolitan area forms one interconnected part, with the city of Brno at its centre. People move around it to work, school, cultural and sporting activities. The metropolitan area has been defined based on the methodology of the Ministry of Regional Development, thanks to data from mobile operators. It includes 184 municipalities with approximately 730 000 inhabitants.
