The transfer terminal in Židlochovice

28 pairs of passenger trains on a working day
23 minutes to get to Brno
73 CZK million of subsidies through ITI tool

Židlochovice is located about 20 kilometres from Brno. It is not surprising that many residents travel from here to the South Moravian metropolis every day for work, study and services. For 40 years, however, there have been no passenger trains stopping in Židlochovice, which would have made the transport of people easier and faster.

But that is no longer the case today. As part of an integrated solution, the line from Hrušovany u Brna to Židlochovice was renewed and electrified in 2019. As a result, passengers on this route can use up to 28 pairs of passenger trains on weekdays. At the same time as the line was modernised, a transfer terminal was built in Židlochovice, which connects train transport with bus, individual car, cycling and pedestrian transport. At the terminal, passengers can use the nearby P+R car park free of charge or place their bicycles in stands and continue their journey to Brno by train or bus. The terminal also has barrier-free access.

The project to improve public transport in Židlochovice cost CZK 900 million. Most of the funds, over 700 million, came from European resources. A grant from the ITI tool worth CZK 73 million financed the construction of a transfer terminal.

“You might say that 20 kilometres is not much, but most people drive to Brno for sometimes an hour and a half. Thanks to metropolitan cooperation, after many years we managed to build a new line and station and thanks to the interchange terminal we can get to the centre of Brno in 23 minutes. I hope that in the future we will be able to replace a large part of car traffic with train traffic,” said Jan Vitula, the mayor of Židlochovice. The transfer terminal not only brought trains back to Židlochovice, but also promoted the use of sustainable modes of transport. The number of passengers travelling by train on the Židlochovice-Brno line was 1,200 on weekdays after the line was opened, and in 2022 it was already more than 1,600 passengers (both ways), an increase of one third. Thanks to metropolitan cooperation, it is possible to work on a sufficient and fully interconnected transport infrastructure and thus ease the traffic situation in the entire Brno Metropolitan Area.
