Network of terminals and P+R parking lots in BMA

3 transfer terminals supported through ITI
8 park and ride parking lots financed through ITI
340 CZK million of subsidies through ITI tool

The solution to improve transport services in Brno and the entire metropolitan area is the construction of intercepting infrastructure in the municipalities in Brno’s hinterland. The key is an integrated approach that includes the expansion of the network of transfer terminals and Park and Ride (P+R) parking lots.

Network of transfer terminals

The first successful example of a supported project was the construction of a transfer terminal in Židlochovice during the 2014-2020 period. After 40 years, rail transport returned to the city, significantly improving commuting options to Brno for local residents. The new terminal connects the railway with bus, bicycle and car transport. Passengers can park their cars here, store their bikes in the bike boxes and continue on by train or bus. Thanks to the new line, the journey to Brno city centre takes just 23 minutes. The number of passengers on the Židlochovice-Brno line has increased from 1,200 to more than 1,600 per day, an increase of one third. Find out more about the transfer terminal here.

This was followed by the Kuřim terminal, which was inaugurated in 2024. This modern hub connects bus, rail and cycle transport. The reconstruction included expanding the number of platforms, roofing them and creating comfortable facilities for passengers. The terminal also includes parking and facilities for cyclists, such as lockable bike boxes, a service rack and a bike wash.

A similar integrated solution is also being developed in Ivančice. So far, there is a P+R parking lot and bicycle racks, and in the second stage of the project a modern terminal for train and bus transport will be built. Once the work is completed, traffic safety should increase and the number of cars travelling between Ivančice and Brno will be reduced.

Kuřim, Ivančice and Židlochovice represent one of the important secondary centres within the Brno Metropolitan Area, therefore it is necessary to support the construction of terminals here.

Park and go

P+R parking lots are a key element of modern transport infrastructure. They allow drivers to park their car on the outskirts of the city and continue their journey by convenient public transport. In the Brno Metropolitan Area, these parking lots have become an effective tool for regulating traffic and preventing congestion. Thanks to the support of the Integrated Territorial Investments (ITI) instrument, P+R parking lots have been created in Tišnov, Sokolnice-Telnice, Bílovice nad Svitavou and on Brno’s Polní Street. In the future, we expect to build parking lots in the south-western part of the metropolitan area. At the same time, two parking lots will be built in Rosice and one each in Zastávka and Bučovice. The parking lots in Rosice and Zastávka follow the strengthening of train connections made possible by the electrification and double-tracking of the line from Zastávka to Brno. A parking house Skořepka is being prepared not far from the main railway station, which will increase the capacity by about 230 parking spaces and will dampen the entry of vehicles into the historical centre itself.

During the 2014-2020 and 2021-2027 programming periods, we have invested CZK 340 million in the construction of three transfer terminals and eight P+R parking lots through the ITI instrument. This has increased the number of parking spaces by 900 for cars and 323 for bicycles. Only a comprehensive and well-functioning network of transfer terminals and parking lots can ensure the sustainability of transport throughout the metropolitan area.
