A new Atlas of the Brno Metropolitan Area was published in 2024 (Czech only). The Atlas offers a different perspective on the relations between Brno and the municipalities in its wider surroundings. A total of ten chapters present a variety of topics ranging from natural characteristics, socio-demographic, transport and economic indicators to information on tourism and amenities of individual municipalities.
Population – 55 % of the total population of the Brno Metropolitan Area lives in Brno. Over the last 10 years, the population has grown by 6.4%. The average age of a BMA citizen is 41 years and 28 % of the population has a university degree. Young residents are moving mostly to communities northeast of Brno and also to the belt of population-growing communities south of Brno. The largest towns in the hinterland (Vyškov, Blansko), on the other hand, are experiencing long-term population stagnation.
Housing – in the chapter on housing, you will find interesting information on how the composition of the housing stock is evolving in different parts of the BMA, for example in terms of price or ownership. More than 58% of flats are privately owned, and between 2014 and 2022, average sublet prices in Brno increased by 145%. The figures on the number of completed flats clearly show which parts of the BMA have seen intensive construction and where construction has stagnated.
Transport and energy – the chapter shows which road sections are the most congested and where most accidents are concentrated. In the section on energy, we find that the most powerful power plants in the BMA area are steam and gas-fired power plants, respectively. Solar power plants are the most installed, with a total of 39 % of installed capacity in renewable sources.
Commuting to work – Brno is a key employment centre for the surrounding municipalities, which creates significant commuting flows – approximately 70 % of the citizens of the metropolitan area commute to Brno. The largest share of commuters to Brno is from the areas of Židlochovice, Kuřim, Tišnov and Blansko. A significant part of commuters use car transport.
Even more interesting information can be found in the document itself which is available only in Czech.
