Cyclists are increasingly moving away from busy roads and away from cars. There are more and more cycle paths designed just for them. A dense network of cycle paths is also being created to the south-east and east of Brno in the \u0160lapanicko and Pozo\u0159icko areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cycling is one of the most popular recreational and leisure activities in the Brno Metropolitan Area. It is also a useful alternative to car transport when travelling to work or school or for services, especially during rush hours. Pedalling saves nerves, which are strained by drivers in a hurry behind the wheel, and produces far fewer emissions than car transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For these reasons, cyclists deserve their own infrastructure, as the roads are not always safe for them. In heavy traffic, they can get run over by cars – either through their own fault or because of an inattentive motor vehicle driver. Yet there are still not enough safe cycle lanes. Many cyclists in Brno and its surroundings use the two backbone routes along the Svitava and Svratka rivers, but if they want to go elsewhere, they often encounter a missing traffic network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A whole network of cycle paths has been created in the \u0160lapanice region. One of them, the construction of which began in July 2019 and ended in 2020, connects the villages of Telnice, Sokolnice, Kobylnice, Pon\u011btovice and \u0160lapanice with the Brno city district of Slatina and the \u010cernovick\u00e1 terasa industrial zone. In 2021, the construction of trails between Ji\u0159\u00edkovice and Bla\u017eovice and between Kobylnice and Prac\u00ed started. This network of cycle paths has a total length of 11 kilometres. In 2022, the first stage of the construction of cycle paths from Brno eastwards to Pozo\u0159ice began. After the completion of the first three-kilometre section, cyclists have a more comfortable ride from the Brno district of L\u00ed\u0161e\u0148 through Podol\u00ed and Velatice to Tvaro\u017en\u00e1. The construction of cycling routes in \u0160lapanice and Pozo\u0159ice areas has cost CZK 109.5 million so far, of which CZK 95 million was subsidised through the ITI tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The construction of cycle paths is also continuing in the 2021-2027 programming period, when the Voluntary Association of Municipalities (DSO) \u0160lapanicko is continuing the work already started near Pozo\u0159ice. The second stage of the cycle paths here will lead from Tvaro\u017en\u00e1 through Sivice and Pozo\u0159ice to Kovalovice. It consists of five sections with a total length of almost four kilometres and, in addition to new asphalt, cyclists can also look forward to bike racks. Construction started in the autumn of 2024, and the first enthusiasts are expected to ride between Tvaro\u017en\u00e1 and Kovalovice in October 2025. Everything, including the subsidy from the ITI, should cost CZK 52 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next stage, i.e. the third stage in the Pozo\u0159ice region, will connect Velatice with Mokr\u00e1-Hor\u00e1kov. It is a section measuring less than half a kilometre with total expenditure of CZK 5.5 million, of which the subsidy through the ITI amounts to CZK 3.85 million. Furthermore, DSO \u0160lapanicko is preparing a cycle path from St\u0159elice through Troubsko and Ostopovice to Star\u00fd L\u00edskovec which will be financed from subsidy sources outside the ITI tool..<\/p>\n\n\n\n
