Support for local production in the Brno Metropolitan Area

The theme of food cooperation began to develop more intensively in the Brno Metropolitan Area thanks to the international MECOG-CE project, which focused on supporting cooperation between the city of Brno and its surrounding areas. We have subsequently built on this experience and are continuing to work on this topic with the aim of linking urban and rural areas and further strengthening metropolitan cooperation. We focus primarily on information and coordination activities within the region and on promoting the use of local food in public catering.

Map application Farmers from the region

The ‘Farmers from the region’ map app is a useful tool for anyone wishing to shop locally and responsibly. On the interactive map, you can filter farmers by type of produce (fruit, meat, jams, wine, etc.) and by distribution method (online shop, home delivery, farm-gate sales, etc.). You can also search specifically for organic produce. It offers information on agritourism opportunities and accommodation on farms. Each farmer’s profile includes contact details, including a link to their website.

Activities in the public catering sector

As part of the public catering sector, there is systematic collaboration with school canteen managers with the aim of encouraging more frequent use of local produce in school kitchens. This collaboration includes regular meetings and demonstration cooking sessions. A Good Practice Guide has been produced for schools, offering practical tips on incorporating locally sourced produce into school meals, along with a Cookbook of recipes using local ingredients. A list of local suppliers is also available, making it easier for school canteens to find them and establish partnerships.

On 16 September 2026, the City of Brno joined the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact. This international agreement between cities focuses on developing food cooperation and food policies. It now brings together 330 cities from around the world. Brno became the first city in the Czech Republic to join the pact, thereby gaining access to a database of examples of good practice and inspiration for developing its own initiatives.
